What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a system of health care that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) focus on treating the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — and addressing the root cause of illness, not just symptoms.

How are Naturopathic Doctors trained?

Licensed naturopathic doctors attend accredited four-year medical schools, completing rigorous training in biomedical sciences, clinical diagnosis, and natural therapeutics. Their education includes courses in nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine, counseling, and lifestyle management.

How does a Naturopathic Doctor differ from an MD?

NDs and MDs use the same methods to diagnose disease, however, they differ in their approach to treatment and philosophy. Conventional medicine often focuses on treating symptoms, primarily through pharmaceuticals or surgery. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention, lifestyle, and natural therapies to restore the body’s self-healing ability. Both approaches can complement one another for optimal care.

Are naturopathic treatments safe?

When practiced by a licensed ND, naturopathic medicine is safe and effective. NDs are trained to recognize when natural therapies are appropriate and when conventional medical care or referrals are needed.

What conditions can naturopathic medicine help with?

Naturopathic medicine can support both acute and chronic conditions, such as:

  • Digestive issues (IBS, reflux, food sensitivities)

  • Hormone imbalances (thyroid, menopause, adrenal health)

  • Fatigue and stress-related conditions

  • Allergies and immune support

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Chronic pain or inflammation

  • Mental and emotional wellbeing

What kinds of treatments might be recommended?

Depending on your needs, treatments may include:

  • Clinical nutrition and dietary counseling

  • Herbal medicine

  • Nutritional supplementation

  • Lifestyle and stress management

  • Physical medicine (bodywork, hydrotherapy)

  • Homeopathy or mind-body approaches
